What Is AI SEO? AEO and GEO Explained, and How They Differ From SEO

AI SEO is the work of getting your brand named and cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Here is how AEO and GEO fit with SEO.

AI SEO is the work of getting your business named, described correctly and cited when people ask AI tools for answers. That means ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are two other names for the same goal. They all build on classic SEO rather than replace it. The difference is the finish line. SEO aims for a click from a list of links. AI SEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself.

Three names, one job

You will hear all three terms from agencies, and some will tell you they are separate services. In practice they overlap almost completely.

AEO started with featured snippets and voice assistants. The idea was simple. Write a clear, direct answer to a real question so a search engine can lift it and read it out. That habit still matters.

GEO is the newer label. It refers to tools that generate a fresh answer by reading many sources and writing a summary. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews all work this way.

AI SEO is the plain umbrella term most business owners use. When you hire help, it does not matter much which label they use. What matters is what they actually do, and whether they can show you the work.

How AI answers are built

To understand the work, it helps to know where AI answers come from. There are two main sources.

What the model already knows

Large language models learn from a huge amount of public text during training. If your brand was written about often and consistently across the web before a model was trained, it may “know” you. It may describe what you sell, who you serve and how you compare. If you were barely mentioned, it may not know you at all, or it may guess.

This part is slow to change. You cannot edit what a model learned. You can only make sure the public record about you is clear and plentiful, so future training picks up the right picture.

What the tool looks up live

Many AI tools now search the web before they answer, especially for questions about products, prices, local services or anything recent. ChatGPT does this with its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Perplexity searches on almost every question. Google AI Overviews draw on Google’s own index and ranking systems.

This part moves faster. If your pages are crawlable, clear and well regarded, they can be found and cited in a live answer. We cover the ChatGPT side in more detail in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.

How AI SEO differs from classic SEO

The foundations are shared. Both need a site that can be crawled and indexed. Both reward pages that answer a question well. Both depend on other sites talking about you. A business with weak SEO rarely does well in AI answers.

But there are real differences in emphasis.

The answer replaces the list

A search results page shows many options. An AI answer often names only a few, sometimes one. Being “on page one” is not the same as being in the answer. You are competing for a much smaller space.

Classic SEO cares a great deal about backlinks. AI tools also care about what is said about you, even without a link. Reviews, forum threads, comparison articles, directory listings and press coverage all shape how a model describes your brand. If the web says you are the go-to option for a certain kind of buyer, AI answers tend to repeat that. Our guide to brand mentions for AI answers goes deeper on this.

Questions are longer and more specific

People type short phrases into Google. They ask AI tools full questions, with context. “What is the best protein powder for a woman over fifty who gets bloated” is a normal AI prompt. Pages that speak to specific buyers and specific problems have more to match against.

Consistency is checked across sources

AI tools compare what many sources say. If your site says one thing, your marketplace listing says another and an old review site says a third, the answer may be vague or wrong. Clean, consistent facts about your business everywhere they appear make it easier for a model to describe you with confidence.

Results are harder to measure

There is no AI equivalent of a stable rank tracker. Answers change by prompt, by day, by user and by whether the tool searched. Good measurement means running a fixed set of real buyer questions on a schedule and recording who gets named. You can start this yourself. Here is how to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand.

What AI SEO work actually includes

A serious AI SEO program usually covers five areas.

Access. Make sure AI crawlers are not blocked by accident. Check robots rules for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Make sure key pages are indexed in Google and Bing, since several AI tools lean on those indexes. The technical basics for AI search post covers this list.

Clarity. Rewrite key pages so they say plainly who you are, what you sell, who it is for and how you differ. Put the direct answer near the top. Use headings that match real questions.

Coverage. Publish pages that answer the questions your buyers ask before they buy. Comparisons, use cases, buying guides and honest explanations of trade-offs.

Reputation. Earn mentions on the sites AI tools read and trust. That might be industry publications, review platforms, community forums or “best of” roundups in your niche.

Tracking. Run the same buyer questions across the main AI tools on a regular basis and record what changes.

None of this is magic. It is careful, steady work. Be wary of anyone who sells a secret trick, a special file that forces citations, or a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT. No one controls those answers.

Do you still need regular SEO?

Yes. Google still sends a great deal of traffic, and AI Overviews draw on the same systems that rank normal results. Google has said that standard SEO best practice applies and that no special markup is needed to appear in them. If your organic search is weak, fix that first or at the same time. You can read more about this in how Google AI Overviews choose which sources to cite.

The good news is that most AI SEO work also helps classic SEO. Clearer pages, better coverage and more mentions help on both fronts.

Who should invest in it now

AI SEO makes the most sense if your buyers research before they buy. Ecommerce brands with considered purchases, software, professional services and higher-ticket local services all fit. If customers already ask ChatGPT “what is the best X for Y” in your category, you want to be in that answer.

It makes less sense as a first move if your site has basic problems, or if you have no reviews or outside mentions at all. In that case the groundwork comes first.

If you are weighing outside help, our ranking of AI SEO agencies compares the options, and our AI SEO services page explains how TheCMO approaches the work. TheCMO is run by Nathan Synoground, who has managed $20.5M in Google Ads across 150 client accounts since 2018.

The short version

AI SEO, AEO and GEO all mean the same practical thing: getting your brand into the answers AI tools give. It builds on classic SEO, adds more weight on outside mentions and clear, consistent facts, and is harder to measure. Nobody can promise a mention. Steady work on access, clarity, coverage and reputation gives you the best chance.
